How to Start a Fitness Routine (Again)

It happens.

You get busy and feel like there's no time to workout. You have social obligations and stop eating as healthily as usual. You decide to enjoy summer and let yourself live a little, and before you know it you haven't worked out in weeks.

Number one, know that you are not alone. This is super common!

Number two, know that it is entirely possible to get back on track.

As we head into the Fall, it's time to re-focus on your goals and get back on track. By following these steps, you can start feeling better than ever.

1. Stop beating yourself up.

Seriously. Just stop. The only person you're hurting is yourself. Everyone has setbacks and times when they fall off track. Accept it and move on. The sooner you stop feeling bad about yourself, the sooner you can start loving yourself like you should.

2. Start small.

The biggest mistake people make is biting off more than they can chew. By going too hard, too fast, you set yourself up for failure. You'll fall off track again, feel bad about yourself, and start the cycle all over again. Get out of the cycle by creating a routine you can sustain for the long-term. Can you commit to 30 minutes of movement a day? Great. Start there.

3. Get support.

Join a community of like-minded people to keep you accountable (we happen to have one, if you're interested!) Tell your friends and family what your goals are so they can help you stay on track. Get a trainer or coach to check in on you and tell you what to do. Everyone needs support, so don't be afraid to ask for what you need.

4. Move in a way you enjoy.

If you absolutely hate a certain type of workout, do something else! For example, I hate running, so I don't make that a regular part of my routine. It's less important HOW you move, and more important THAT you move. And if you're someone that just hates working out in any way? Well, pick the way you hate the least and start there!

5. Focus on discipline, not motivation.

You aren't always going to feel motivated. That's just a fact. Motivation is flaky and continually comes and goes. So instead, focus on being disciplined. If you create a sustainable routine (see point #2) it will be easier to stick to it, even when you don't feel like it. The more you stick to your routine, the more results you'll see, the better you'll feel, and the more it will become a habit.

Go into the Fall feeling re-focused and refreshed. It's never too late to recommit to your goals, to your health, and to your self.
