Super Bowl Sunday: How to Enjoy Yourself AND Stay on Track
It’s Super Bowl Sunday! That special time of year when Americans come together to drink beer, yell at a screen, and shove food into our face like we’ve never had a hot wing before (let’s face it, that’s most of our holidays, right?) And even if you’re like us and don’t give a shit about the game itself, we all love to the chance to socialize, laugh at funny ads, watch the half-time show, and eat lots of greasy, delicious food.
A lot of people will tell you to shun the fried and calorie dense foods at all costs, say no to the beer, and workout the morning before in order to earn your calories. We aren’t going to tell you any of that.
Here’s our tip: ENJOY yourself today, and know that one day has never made or broken anyone’s progress.
Putting unsustainable restrictions on yourself is a recipe for a binge sooner or later. It’s also a recipe for being miserable. And what’s the point of a six-pack if you are scared of having a damn beer?
And… it’s possible to allow yourself to enjoy today, relax a little, and still stay on track. Here are our 8 tips for how to make it work:
Plan for a high calorie day today, and follow it with a few days of eating nutrient dense foods, lots of protein, and slightly fewer calories.
Bookend the day with a light breakfast and a light dinner, with lots of lean protein.
Drink a lot of water before the game, and aim for a glass of water for every beer you have.
Move your body in some capacity today— not because you need to “earn” your food, but because your body doesn’t like sitting on a couch all day and being filled with beer and mozzarella sticks.
When you want something, allow yourself to have it. When you’re just eating out of habit or because it’s available, try to eat more intuitively. Recognize when you don’t actually want that snack, and know you can say, “I’m good, thanks.”
Bring some food of your own that feels indulgent, but is relatively good for you as well (we’re looking at you, guacamole!)
Enjoy whatever you choose to eat or drink, and don’t assign any guilt or shame to what you’re putting in your body. There is no moral value to food, and eating something doesn’t make you a better or worse person.
Know that doing even ONE of these things will make a huge difference.
